MSN Travel deemed Vancouver one of the worst dressed in the world due to our affinity for yoga pants and Gore-Tex, but Ryan Willms is attempting to change that and raise the profile of the city’s fashion industry. The Victoria native is the creator and editor of what’s known to fans as the menswear bible: the bi-annual, glossy Inventory magazine that curates high-end, understated looks for the GQ crowd. The weighty magazines (usually 200-plus pages an issue) are sold at around 300 high-end retailers, bookstores and specialty stores. Willms’s stylistic vision is spreading beyond the confines of Vancouver: in addition to the print publication, he and his small team also run a boutique adjacent to their Gastown office, and lovers of Inventory’s minimalistic looks can find those fashions abroad in its standalone shop in Brooklyn and pop-ups within Dover Street Market’s stores in Tokyo and London. –Lindsey Peacock
