BCBusiness will announce the 2017 30 Under 30 winners on April 13. In the meantime, here’s what a 2016 winner had to say last year

To help us choose last year’s 30 Under 30, we sent each candidate a series of questions to see what made them tick. Here’s how Mariel Armstrong, who co-founded Partyskirts in 2013, responded.

What motivational quote gets you going?
“Be inspired by others’ success, not defeated.”

Beyond family and friends, who inspires you to succeed?
“Every single entrepreneur! Now that we run our own business, we have higher respect for how much work it really is.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“If you can dream it, you can do it. We grew up in a household where no dream was too big. When we decided to start Partyskirts and first approached our mom with the idea, she immediately responded with ‘Go for it!’ The rest is history.”

What’s the worst advice you’ve ever received?
“Early on in our business, we were often advised to bring on people to help us with things such as direction for our branding and concepts. We quickly learned that we were the best people to make these creative decisions for our business since it is so much a part of us.”

What’s your biggest fear?
“It’s always a bit nerve racking when we put out new product. We want our customers to love every print and colour we design, so I would say that stands out as a fear.”

What’s your biggest regret?
“When we initially launched, our focus was very Vancouver heavy. We quickly corrected that, though, and now have a much more national and continental focus.”

What is your favourite TV show right now?
Dragons’ Den! We recently filmed our episode and will be airing this spring [2016].”

Favourite magazine?
“Vogue”

What song is on repeat on your device right now?
“Apple Music Beats Radio”

A little-known fact about me is…
“I have a little Boston terrier named Herb who is my other half! He comes almost everywhere with me.”
