City of New Westminster

The City of New Westminster is undergoing a significant transformation that will draw the attention of visitors, residents and the business community.

The face of New Westminster is changing. After more than a decade of planning, New Westminster’s revival has finally come to fruition, transforming the city from an aging bedroom community to a revitalized and dynamic hub with a vibrant downtown core.

The guiding vision is one of New Westminster as a complete, well-rounded and accessible hub in the Lower Mainland, offering the amenities and conveniences of a downtown metropolis without losing sight of the history and small-town feel of B.C.’s oldest city.

B.C.’s biggest developers have already recognized the city’s potential, getting in on the ground floor of New West’s dramatic economic revival. New residential, commercial and industrial developments representing hundreds of millions of dollars of investment are under construction in every neighbourhood of the city. Local amenities—including a complete revitalization of the city’s waterfront and a $1-billion redevelopment of Royal Columbian Hospital—are growing at pace.

Opening in September 2014, the award-winning Anvil Centre will be the Lower Mainland’s newest mid-size conference venue, boasting an art gallery, a museum and archives, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, community programming space and a performing arts theatre—all complementing the 10,000-square-foot full-service conference centre. As an anchor in the downtown core, it will make New West one of the Fraser Valley’s top business destinations.

Mayor Wayne Wright credits a proactive city council and a supportive and welcoming business community as the primary drivers behind the change. Likening New Westminster to the Little Engine That Could, Wright is proud of what the city has already achieved. “We’ve made the right moves, and I think it will be a template for the future—it’s going to show other cities how to succeed.”
