Congratulations to Hire the World Enterprises Inc., #16 in 2012’s Most Innovative Companies in B.C.

Geography is often a hiring hindrance, forcing small businesses to seek employees from a small pool of local applicants. But Burnaby-based Hire the World Enterprises removes geography as a factor in finding qualified candidates for creative work.

Through the company’s website, businesses can post graphic or web design assignments, inviting Hire the World’s pool of more than 7,000 freelancers in 143 countries to bid on the work. Employers can also use the site’s crowd-sourcing contests where freelancers complete a design and the employer chooses a favourite and pays the designer.

While crowd-sourcing isn’t exactly cutting edge, Hire the World is evolving into a contract hiring agency of sorts. Employers can locate, manage and pay contract workers for administrative work, web and logo design, translation services and data entry, all through the company’s website. Hire the World chat boards help workers in the same field connect, making it simple for one worker to pass on overflow assignments to another (or for employers to find reputable contractors). Hire the World also offers software that streams real-time information for employers to watch the progress of their projects from anywhere in the world.

Hire the World’s ingenuity was rewarded early when it won an award from Oxford University’s Saïd Business School Venture Fund and the $123,000 top-prize package in the B.C. Innovation Council New Ventures Competition, both in 2010.

“We saw this trend of creative people distinguishing themselves via the Internet,” says Terry Beech, CEO and co-founder of Hire the World. “You should be able to apply and work wherever you want. And in the same way, a great employer in Saskatoon should be able to get a hold of the top talent.”
