In Vancouver’s hot housing debate, few topics draw fire like the controversy over the upsurge of empty homes in the city. But in March, a study largely discredited the meme, finding that the proportion of unoccupied single family houses stood at 4.8 per cent, the same rate as in 2002. Condos, however, were another story. In a city where rental vacancy hovers below 0.3 per cent, civic politicians immediately seized upon the tally of 10,000 empty condos. So now the city wants to do something about it—and is asking residents for their thoughts
