Rendering of Tsawwassen Mills

The latest developments in the world of lifestyle—from retail to restaurants to travel (and more!)

Retail / Metro Vancouver is getting a Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th store. The 32,687-square-foot B.C. store will be one of the anchors of the 1.2-million-square-foot Tsawwassen Mills being built by Ivanhoé Cambridge. It is expected to open in fall 2016.

Eatery / Chinatown has a fresh new restaurant: Juniper at Keefer and Main. The name reflects both executive chef Sarah Stewart’s Pacific Northwest menu and Shaun Layton’s gin-forward bar. The 3,000-square-foot two-storey space sits 104.

Retail / Vancouver fashion retailer Marcello Leone has launched an athletics brand, RYU (Respect Your Universe) Apparel, that combines the elegant Leone style with technical elements from former Lululemon, Arc’teryx and PolarTek designers. Both a flagship store on West 4th in Kitsilano and the e-commerce site are up and running. Leone plans to open 163 North American locations over the next nine years.

Food / G-Kup Technology Inc.’s patented “rigid cup” coffee pod design is now commercial-ready. The cup is completely compostable after 12 weeks—a first for the single-serve beverage pod market. The Vancouver company, which is working with UBC scientists including Anthony Lau, one of North America’s leading composting experts, is holding demonstrations with major coffee brands and independent roasters to showcase the G-Kup’s sustainable beverage solution.
