The organization hands out recognition for both leadership and green building excellence.
Colin Pinchin was recognized for his Pathways project
Three B.C.-based innovators were recognized yesterday as the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) announced the 14 winners of its 2020 Leadership and Green Building Excellence Awards.
The honours cover achievements in leadership and eco-conscious building design.
B.C. saw two winners in the former category. The City of Vancouver won the Government Leadership title for “aggressive green building strategies, demonstrating how other Canadian municipalities can design and build leading-edge green buildings,” according to a release.
The CaGBC noted that in 2019, Vancouver adopted a strategy to measure and reduce embodied carbon in new construction projects.
Colin Pinchin won the Andy Kesteloo Memorial Project Award for student leadership. The fourth-year student at BCIT was given the honour for Pathways: A Sustainable Approach for Rehabilitation and Regeneration of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
The project seeks to provide opportunity to the vulnerable population in the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood through a combination of place regeneration, transitional housing and skills development within a mixed-use building design.
In the building category, West Bay Passive House, designed by BattersbyHowat Architects, took the Inspiring Home award.
The 4,000-square-foot, three-storey house in West Vancouver has a solar roof, two terraces and two landscaped gardens. It won for “achieving net zero energy in style.”
