The biannual event celebrates the latest and greatest innovations in industry

Once again it’s time for something that’s become a rite of passage for the local technology sector: the British Columbia Innovation Council‘s Ignite Awards. BCBusiness is a media sponsor of the event, which takes place on Wednesday, March 28, at Telus Garden from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Ignite Awards are a form of funding, given out biannually to research projects that address a problem faced by a specific industry. BCIC expects winners to bring their proposed innovation to market within three years.

This week the Crown agency will bestow a total of almost $1 million—individual projects can win as much as $300,000—to several contenders in natural resources and applied science. All of the ventures feature a prominent figure at a B.C. post-secondary institution working with a company in the relevant industry.

The fourth instalment of the Ignite Awards features speeches by Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology Bruce Ralston and Shirley Vickers, president and CEO of BCIC. BCBusiness editor-in-chief Nick Rockel will emcee the evening.

The previous awards, in October 2017, saw four recipients, among them BCBusiness 30 Under 30 winner Tamer Mohamed. His company, Vancouver-based Aspect Biosystems Ltd., took home almost $140,000 with UVic mechanical engineering professor Stephanie Willerth for their work to develop functional, 3D bio-printed human nerve tissue.

The deadline to apply for the sixth round of the BCIC Ignite Awards is July 23, 2018. Click here for details.
