Award is given annually by UVic’s Peter B. Gustavson School of Business to “celebrate the achievements of an inspirational entrepreneur”

Stewart Butterfield is the recipient of this year’s Peter B. Gustavson School of Business Distinguished Entrepreneur of the Year Award (DEYA) from UVic.

Butterfield is best known as co-founder of instant messaging service Slack Technologies Inc. and photo-sharing website Flickr (sold to Yahoo! Inc. in 2005). Raised in Victoria, he received a BA in philosophy from UVic in 1996 before earning a master’s in the same discipline at the University of Cambridge.

Past DEYA winners include music producer David Foster (2015), Lululemon Athletica Inc. founder Dennis (Chip) Wilson (2012) and Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers co-founder David Ritchie (2005).

Butterfield is the first UVic alumnus to take home the prize since the original recipient, San Francisco Giants principal owner Jeff Mallett, in 2004. He will receive his award at the DEYA gala on May 11 at the Victoria Conference Centre.
