Vancouver ranks among 10 best cities for careers in the metaverse and NFTs

Vancouver is the seventh-best city worldwide to pursue a career in the metaverse, according to a new study.

When it comes to the B.C. tech sector’s showing in a new trio of top 10 lists, two out of three ain’t bad.

We might still not know exactly what the term means, but Vancouver is the seventh-best city worldwide to pursue a career in the metaverse, according to a study by online gambling site MrQ. Singapore, London, Hong Kong, Dubai and Toronto occupy the top five spots, with Montreal taking ninth place.

To compile its rankings for each field, MrQ looked at average salary, job vacancies, number of businesses and—a deal breaker—average broadband and mobile download speed.

For those who work in non-fungible tokens (NFTs), B.C.’s biggest city ranks No. 10 globally, well behind fifth-place Toronto. Singapore, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo round out the top five.

The ranking also includes the 10 best cities for a career in cryptocurrency. Vancouver didn’t make that list, which is dominated by U.S. metropolises. The top five: New York, Oakland, Silicon Valley (not a city, folks), Singapore and Los Angeles.

With an average salary of US$63,644 for NFT workers, Vancouver placed seventh—well behind top-ranked Sydney, where average pay is US$93,877. It also ranked 10th for average metaverse salary, at US$57,798, while Toronto finished sixth, with US$62,640.

Both of those numbers look like pocket change compared to the No. 1 player—Mexico City—where the average metaverse worker earns US$317,332, according to MrQ. ¡Qué susto!
