To help us choose last year’s 30 Under 30, we sent each candidate a series of questions to see what made them tick. Here’s how Kasondra Cohen-Herrendorf, who launched the Face of Today Foundation in 2009, responded.
What motivational quote gets you going?“‘It is the little things in life that make people happy.’ My dad and I were out for a walk the evening before he passed away. He looked at me and told me that, and it hit me, he was totally right. Since May 2014, I have lived by that.”
Beyond family and friends, who inspires you to succeed?“Oprah Winfrey. I was able to attend her final show at United Center, and it was life-changing. Seeing all of the people’s lives that she has influenced is inspiring. I walked out of the stadium motivated to help make our world a better place. The few times I have had the privilege of meeting her, she was always very down to earth and genuine. I aspire to be a philanthropist like her.”
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?“My grandma always tells me to take life one piece of the pie at a time. Don’t try and bite off more than you can chew. Whenever I feel stressed out, I think about that and it gives me clarity.”
What’s the worst advice you’ve ever received?“People told me to start a business over a charity and that I was doing things backwards. Fortunately I didn’t listen, and I am happier than ever with my decision.”
What’s your biggest fear?“Not making my family proud of my accomplishments. There is so much pressure in society to be the best. My mom and dad are both very successful in their own ways, and I strive to leave a legacy for my children one day the way they have created one for me.”
What’s your biggest regret?“Not making more of an effort to be close to my dad as a child.”
What’s your favourite TV show right now?“Suits. I love that it is filmed in Toronto so it’s a Canadian show.”
Favourite magazine?“Women’s Health”
What song is on repeat on your device right now?“Sam Smith’s ‘Stand by me.’ I love the message—when it was released, it had a lot of meaning for me. I also think he is incredibly talented.”
A little-known fact about me is “I love being active and enjoying time with my family and friends. Nothing gives me more pleasure than being surrounded by the people I love.”
