To help us choose last year’s 30 Under 30, we sent each candidate a series of questions to see what made them tick. Here’s how Bryan Gallagher, who is the Business Development Manager for Inlailawatash Limited Partnership, responded.

What motivational quote gets you going?
“Wiikh-hay-itsk wik-qook huupee-is wa: If you do not ask for help when you need it, you are not kind’ (2004, 47) in Tsawalk: A Nuu-chah-nulth Worldview by Umeek Richard Atleo. This motivates me to seek for advice when starting a new project and to ask for help in my personal life when needed.
‘Whatever you are, try to be a good one’ (1897) attributed to Laurence Hutton.”

Beyond family and friends, who inspires you to succeed?
“Milton Wong (late), former chancellor of SFU (one of my mentors and friends): extreme generosity to others. A man who broke down cultural and ethnic barriers and brought people together. A generator of innovative ideas. Humble in everything he did. He has shown me how to be successful and make a huge impact and to do so in the kindest way possible. Dr. Tom Lawrence, professor of strategy at the University of Oxford (my PhD senior supervisor): An academic with an incredible depth of knowledge and focus on scientific and writing rigour. He inspires me to think, write and strategize with rigour.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“You can make it taking an unconventional path through life if you are great at what you do.”

What’s the worst advice you’ve ever received?
“Don’t do a PhD at a university in the city where you want to work in.”

What’s your biggest fear?
“Living an un-impactful life.”

What’s your biggest regret?
“Taking health, relationships, and other aspects of life for granted.”

What’s your favourite TV show right now?
“Canadian Pickers. Grass roots commercial negotiations and Canadiana combined.”

Favourite magazine?
“BCBusiness. Seriously!”

What song is on repeat on your device right now?
“Return to the Moon’ by EL VY.”

A little-known fact about me is…
“I like trout. On the B.C. coast, they are often underappreciated compared to other fish.”
