To help us choose last year’s 30 Under 30, we sent each candidate a series of questions to see what made them tick. Here’s how Braeden Caley, who became the Liberal Party of Canada’s senior director of communications in February 2016, responded.

What motivational quote gets you going?
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” —Maya Angelou

Beyond family and friends, who inspires you to succeed?
“Harvey Milk, who achieved immense gains and visibility for human rights and the LGBTQ community in the United States and throughout the world, and showed irrepressible courage in taking on discrimination both as an activist and elected official.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“To be relentlessly determined in any task you take on—and that advice was from my grandmother. My grandmother came to Canada during the Great Depression when she was five years old and became the first woman in her family to earn a full university degree (attending six classes while married and raising three children). She worked in an oil company’s office and taught business and computing at a time when few women were in any of those fields, and she has always been an inspiration to me.”

What’s your biggest regret?
“Not learning more languages. But my French is getting better again, and that’s an important resolution for 2016.”

What’s your favourite TV show right now?
Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain, for all of the inspiration on new places to travel to and explore.”

Favourite magazine?
“New York Times Magazine.”

What song is on repeat on your device right now?
“‘Fire and the Flood’ by Vance Joy, and ‘The Rising’ by Bruce Springsteen.”

A little-known fact about me is…
“Coke Zero sustains me far, far more than it should.”
