Four B.C. craft brewers, inspired by a CBC Radio 3 Twitter poll, make beer named for local bands

A simple Twitter contest by a CBC DJ has brewed up four new B.C. beers dedicated to much-loved local bands, just in time for Vancouver's Craft Beer Week. Last fall, CBC Radio 3 host Grant Lawrence asked for Canadian band-inspired beer names (implied was the extra points that would be granted for the most epic puns) with the hashtag #CDNBandBeer. The hashtag trended and hundreds of suggestions poured in.

Ben Didier, a graphic designer at CBC Music, was so taken with the names and concept that he designed a series of fake labels of some favourites. From there, CBC Music listener and follower, Old Yale Brewing Company’s Jeremy Sibley, started recruiting B.C.'s microbrewers to act on the crowd-sourced ingenuity.

On Friday, host Grant Lawrence tweeted to the winning Twitter handles that "not many people can say their Twitter name is printed on 2,000 beer bottles. You can!"

There will be 2,000 650ml bottles produced of each brew, with D.O.Ale, submitted by @Storytellinc and brewed by Chilliwack’s Old Yale Brewing Company, kicking things off on Friday, May 17. The three remaining beers will be released weekly until June. 7.

The series—titled “CBCMusic.ca Canadian Band Beer”—will be available in private British Columbia liquor stores.
