Hawksworth Restaurant launches inaugural scholarship competition.
Inaugural Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship competition to provide platform for young Canadian chefs to jump-start careers
A non-profit program, the scholarship will see 10 future culinary stars from across the country showcase their skills in the competition. Three finalists will be judged by a panel of top Canadian chefs and critics who will provide constructive criticism and advice for the fresh talent. “This will assist the winner in developing their professional skillset and... place them at the forefront of the culinary industry, allowing them to secure positions in reputable Canadian or internationally recognized restaurants," says chef David Hawksworth.
The competition is open to Red Seal Canadian chefs under 28 years of age who are working full-time with a professional kitchen. In addition to the $10,000 bursary, the winner will receive stage at a top international restaurant.
Judges from Ontario include chef Mark McEwan of Top Chef Canada and award-winning food author Jacob Richler. Vij's chef Vikram Vij, Hawksworth Restaurant’s chef de cuisine Kristian Eligh and chef David Hawksworth will represent the West Coast on the judging panel. A Quebec judge is still to be confirmed.
The 10 finalists will come together at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver on October 27. Closing the competition, a fundraising dinner will be held that evening with each chef judge creating a course.
Applications for the scholarship are accepted online and applicants must submit a recipe using provided ingredients. Rules and more information are available on the official website. For reservations and information about the fundraising dinner, call 604-673-7000.
