On the corner of Homer and Smithe streets in downtown Vancouver, where the Homer Café once resided, is a semantically similar yet gastronomically distinct new restaurant: Homer St. Cafe and Bar. The charming new bistro occupies two notable Vancouver buildings—the Homer and the Beasley—and was renovated and conceived by the owners of Tableau Bar Bistro.
The 100-seat restaurant centres on a fire engine-red, French-imported Rotisol rotisserie, which plays a significant role in the menu that abounds with fresh, seasonal ingredients and local chickens. It was also the inspiration behind the open kitchen. “It’s such a showpiece,” says executive chef Marc-André Choquette (a.k.a. Chef Mac) of the rotisserie.
The team envisioned customers “sitting at the kitchen bar, seeing the guy working,” with the grand rotisserie as the backdrop. The rest of the space marries an old-school sensibility— reclaimed wood, tiled floors, moulded ceilings—with chic touches characteristic of the restaurant’s Yaletown neighbourhood.
Most recently the restaurant launched its brunch menu, which Chef Mac says is influenced by casual, home-cooked meals. (homerstreetcafebar.com)
