BCIT Business + Media students are trained, practiced and job-ready

Students launch fulfilling careers in marketing, media, business and finance thanks to hands-on learning and strong industry partnerships.

From tuning into the evening news to doing business in the finance sector, chances are you’ve already experienced the impact of a BCIT School of Business + Media graduate.

“We focus on collaborative, hands-on, applied education that empowers students to start or advance fulfilling careers,” says Kenton Low, dean of the School of Business + Media at BCIT. “The feedback from industry is clear: our graduates are job-ready and able to contribute from day one.”

BCIT’s School of Business + Media offers more than 100 programs and 300 courses across full-time and flexible learning formats, spanning fields like finance, marketing, broadcast journalism, accounting, graphic design, animation, sustainability, human resources and business management. Students can ladder from certificate to diploma to degree to a graduate level credential.

These programs consistently produce high-performing graduates thanks to deep, ongoing collaboration with industry. Business Consulting Projects are one example, where student teams work directly with companies to solve real-world challenges, such as streamlining operations, increasing customer retention or reaching new markets.

Internships and practicums are also a cornerstone of BCIT’s applied approach. “These programs are a win-win for everyone,” Low says. “Organizations from transportation and government to sports, tech and retail turn to BCIT for student placements, fresh thinking and future talent.”

For employers looking to develop their existing workforce, BCIT Corporate Training delivers customized learning. The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, for example, partnered with BCIT to launch a tailored Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) training program for its members.

BCIT Business + Media grads are in high demand. One graduate in broadcast media and communications rose through roles with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Vancouver Canucks before being recruited as a vice-president with the Florida Panthers who went on to win the 2024 Stanley Cup.

Beyond technical expertise, BCIT students are equipped with in-demand soft skills like collaboration, effective communication and adaptability. “BCIT has opportunities for students to develop these skills through partnerships with recognized leaders like The Walt Disney Company,” Low says. “If you want to learn world-class customer service, it doesn’t get any better than Disney.”

BCIT’s strength lies in its people. Faculty have deep and ongoing industry experience and are often called upon to provide insight. BCIT’s program head for insurance and risk management is routinely consulted on wildfire and flood situations, and the associate dean of marketing management programs has provided insight ranging from out of province workforce migration to the economic impact of Taylor Swift’s visit to Vancouver.

BCIT’s edge? “We’ve stayed true to our polytechnic roots since 1962,” says Low. “Applied education isn’t a buzzword here, it’s who we are.

“When you look for the polytechnic standard in Canada, that’s BCIT.”
