As Vancouver attempts to cut down on the use of plastic materials, it appears that straws will be targeted by the city. 

Straws and stir sticks account for some three percent of shoreline litter in Vancouver, as Canadians throw out about 57 million straws a day. 

Montreal abandoned straws in January, while Victoria has plans to do the same in July. Vancouver city council will consider how to curb plastic waste on its streets and shorelines in mid-May. 

Meanwhile around the world, startups are working on replacing plastic with edible packaging and straws, and one B.C. store sells groceries with no containers at all.
