Why three Colorado communities are suing Calgary-based Suncor

Boulder County, San Miguel County and the City of Boulder are unhappy about the cost of oil-related climate change that is damaging local infrastructure. They have filed a lawsuit demanding that Suncor Energy Inc., whose U.S. headquarters are in Denver, and Texas-based Exxon Mobil Corp. pay their fair share. The communities say that Suncor, which supplies about 35 percent of the state’s gasoline and diesel fuel, directly emitted one million tonnes of greenhouse gases in Colorado in 2016. None of the claims have been proven in court.
