The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. That’s a trend that has been observed worldwide over the past 40 years. French economist Thomas Piketty spent over 1,000 pages in his bestselling 2014 tome Capital explaining why it happened. Only, it hasn’t happened lately in Canada. This provocative analysis in Quartz uses Statistics Canada data to show that it’s actually the poorest fifth of households whose net worth grew the most—24%—between 2013 and 2016. All income groups, it’s worth noting, saw their wealth increase during the period, but it’s quite a different story from what’s happening south of the 49th Parallel.
