If Vancouver wasn’t a yoga Mecca before, we’re one step (or pose) closer.

Spiritual leader and author Deepak Chopra chose Vancouver as the home of his first custom-designed yoga studio. Chopra Yoga Centre, which opened Tuesday, is just the first studio slated in a proposed international chain.

The studio differentiates itself by integrating its namesake’s “Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” into its practices. According to its website, yogis will “find your practice to be more fulfilling because of the intention and principles behind the teaching.” The business also plans to donate 5 per cent of its profits to local charities.

The 8,000-square-foot studio, located at 451 Granville Street, offers yoga and pilates classes as well as an in-studio restaurant.

Does Vancouver really need one more yoga studio? Not so much. It seems almost every neighbourhood hosts its own studio full of awkwardly posed yogi wannabes. But Chopra’s choice to build his flagship space in Vancouver speaks to the city’s status as a global yoga hot spot.

With the trend at its peak, Vancouverites can expect more studios and yoga-related businesses to flock to the region.
