Outdoor tents, BBQs and nighttime crowds – sure signs of summer – are in abundance at Richmond’s annual Summer Night Market, which kicks off its fifth annual festival this month. Find a dizzying array of food stalls and vendors offering Asian specialties like bubble tea, dim sum, BBQ pork and spicy fish balls (much tastier than they sound). Last year, crowds up to 28,000 a night soaked up the atmosphere and savoured the offerings. This means that parking is often at a premium, so if you’re coming from downtown Vancouver the SkyTrain is a great way to get there. The market opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays. 12631 Vulcan Way, Richmond, May 11 to September 16. summernightmarket.com

With a mandate to highlight and celebrate community artists, Artists in our Midst has spent the last 20 years bringing art to Vancouver’s cultural forefront. This year, the volunteer-run organization will host two free events: an art exhibition and sale and an Open Studio Walk. On May 16, Yaletown’s Roundhouse Community Centre will be transformed into a gallery showcasing the work of more than 50 local artists, including paintings, ceramics, jewelry and photography. For an experience beyond the traditional gallery visit, the Open Studio Walk is the festival’s must-see event. These self-guided tours provide the opportunity to see artists in their own studios around Vancouver’s west side. Design your own tour using the event’s online map and explore as many galleries as you like, many of which offer free talks throughout the three-day event.
