Call it a win for the working class.

The United Steelworkers (USW) won a case in October in Tumbler Ridge as 280 miners have been awarded a $13 million payout.

The settlement ends a three-and-a-half year legal fight, which started when workers at the Wolverine Mine were laid off without receiving 60 days’ notice.

The union took the mine’s owner, Walter Energy Canada, to the Labour Relations Board and won, but when the Canadian company’s U.S. parent went bankrupt, the settlement seemed doubtful. But the USW took the issue to B.C. Supreme Court and in May won a decision that protected the claims of its members.
