The Tahltan Central Government, led by President Chad Norman Day, has written a “strongly worded letter” to the government of British Columbia requesting an immediate hunting ban throughout Tahltan territory.

The Tahltan First Nation mostly live in northwestern B.C., around Telegraph Creek, Dease Lake and Iskut. Their territory has been under a state of emergency since early August, with wildfires forcing about 300 evacuees to relocate throughout the province and to the Yukon.

Animals have been fleeing the fires and are demonstrating abnormal behaviours, according to Day. As a result, the First Nation is concerned about hunters safety.

Fires have reportedly destroyed nearly 30 homes in Telegraph Creek.
