In 2015, the former Liberal government launched an investigation into whether a bridge or road link from the Lower Mainland to the Sunshine Coast was feasible.

The current NDP-led government has decided not to pursue the project, issuing a report explaining why.

In the report, the government concludes that all of the options presented serious challenges, including rocky inclines, mountain passes and deepwater channels.

None of the options would eliminate the need for a ferry crossing, according to the authors.
