British Columbians still reeling from the fact that their country won’t be represented at the FIFA World Cup this June may be able to take solace in the results of the recent 2018 World Beer Cup.
As part of the Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, which took place in Nashville, Tennesse this year, the World Beer Cup crowned gold, silver and bronze winners in 101 categories.
B.C. breweries made a strong showing, with eight companies taking home a total of nine awards. Riot Brewing Co. of Chemainus led the way, capturing a gold and bronze in the English-Style Mild Ale category. Vancouver’s Powell Brewery and Abbotsford’s Ravens Brewing Co. also claimed gold medals, in the Extra Special Bitter and the Leipzig-Style Gose or Contemporary Gose categories, respectively.
In all, Canada received 14 medals, placing second to the U.S. among 66 competing nations.
Beers were judged during six sessions over three days by a panel of 295 judges from 33 countries. In all, the judges evaluated 8,234 concoctions.
Next year’s awards will be in Denver, Colorado.
