Don't sleep on these fresh linens, high-tech pillows and soothing aromatherapy
Chris Manley and Olga Roberts lead the team at Victoria-based organic bedding company Resthouse (founded by Manley in 2014). The brand’s in-house private label Kakun includes mattresses, mattress toppers, body pillows, throws and more—counting all of their naturally breathable, moisture-wicking products is as effective as counting sheep.
When Fredrik Oerling and Julie Wu first launched Sömn Home in 2017, they sold out of a season’s worth of product in two weeks—proof that Vancouverites are hungry for high-quality linen bedding. The yarn-dyed European linen is machine washable and doesn’t need to be ironed, so it’s luxurious but also practical. Offcuts are made into napkins and kitchen towels, meaning you can sleep guilt-free in this low-waste brand.
Métis entrepreneur Megan Camp’s father and grandfather both worked for the Canadian park warden service, so an appreciation for the outdoors is in her blood. Her artisanal candle and scented home products business, Camp Candle Co., reflects this: products are made with sustainably grown, environmentally friendly materials. Everything (including the ultra-calming eucalyptus, cedarwood and lavender reed diffuser) is handmade by Camp in Maple Ridge.
Inside an unassuming, garage-like structure in Roberts Creek is Pam Magee’s studio: here, she’s been handcrafting intricate, cozy blankets and throws on reclaimed antique Dobcross shuttle looms for a decade. Macgee Cloth weaves lambswool and ringspun cotton the old-fashioned way, and both the process and the results are totally mesmerizing.
Hot take: you can never have too many throw pillows. Vancouver-based Tafui McLean’s textiles provide a splash of black-and-white boldness to your bedroom setup—each pillow pattern is inspired by one of her original paintings. The artist has been selling home goods under her eponymous brand since 2014.
Katherine Evans has a background in tourism, but when COVID slowed her industry, she dove into the world of wellness and founded her essential oil blend company Tallu & Co. in February 2021. All of the brand’s ingredients are sourced from Vancouver (it’s a hyper-local operation), and sleep-focused products include a “Night” roller made with lavender and chamomile.
Best friends Carly Jefferson and Tlell Wilson launched Sons in Vancouver this June (the name comes from their shared surname suffix). The 100-percent cotton PJs are available in three floral prints: minty green, warm yellow and soft pink.
“Each brand was using a different name for the same synthetic fluff,” says Larissa Hildebrandt of her pillow research—that is, before she launched Vancouver-based Henrie in 2022. Henrie is super transparent about what’s inside each pillow: the blend of memory foam and kapok fibre is adjustable, meaning that customers are encouraged to remove the filling as required to suit their own neck needs.
