5 B.C. brands leading the zero-proof, non-alcoholic beverage revolution

These local startups are innovating with bold flavours and quality ingredients to redefine the non-alcoholic beverage scene

1. Edna’s

Vancouver-based non-alcoholic cocktail company Edna’s produces more than your average mocktail (which, frankly, are sometimes just glorified soda or juice). Co-founder and COO Nick Devine is a self-proclaimed “lifelong bartender” who says he wanted to create “premium non-alcoholic cocktails, in a ready-to-drink format, that also work seamlessly as a mixer… with the quality and authenticity of a cocktail you’d have in proper cocktail bar.” Edna’s non-alcoholic beverages (which include mojitos, collins, palomas and more) are made with custom spirit extracts (which provide aroma) and citrus shrub to mimic the bite of booze.

2. Nonny

Brothers Lane and Leigh Matkovich founded Vancouver-based Nonny in 2022 with the goal of bringing “the fun of craft beer into the non-alc beer world,” says Lane. The brand’s innovative process doesn’t just remove alcohol from a full-strength brew—“Nonny builds our beer from the bottom up,” explains Lane. The result? A full-flavoured non-alcoholic beer that rivals those in the competitive craft market. Their offerings range from Czech pilsner to West Coast IPA to limited-edition releases.

3. aelo

Aēlo founder and CEO Christos Kalaitzis says the non-alcoholic, ready-to-drink brand was launched in North Vancouver in“mid-2022—before the non-alcoholic cocktail category even had a name.” At the time, he says, “buyers and distributors thought we were crazy for believing in its potential.” Cut to today and the premium, zero-sugar, zero-calorie (but ultra delicious) cocktails are leading the charge in the sector with flavours like aperitivo spritz and limoncello spritz.

5. Lumette

Lumette founders Alayne and Jason MacIsaac are no strangers to the world of booze: they’re also the co-founders of Sheringham Distillery. When they founded the non-alc brand Lumette in Victoria in 2018 it was with the intention to “provide an equally inspiring non-alcoholic option to cocktail lovers everywhere,” says Alayne. The brand’s offerings range from a botanical-forward gin alternative to a toasty, booze-free take on rum.
