An open pit mine dedicated to unearthing copper and gold has been rejected by the B.C. government.

Environment and Climate Change Strategy Minister George Heyman and Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Minister Michelle Mungall said in a news release that the impact on Indigenous heritage, the proximity to Kamloops and environmental concerns make the project an unacceptable risk.

The 1,700-hectare mine would have been next to the Aberdeen neighbourhood and not far away from an elementary school.

The mine has been under consideration since 2006, when it was proposed by KGHM International Ltd.
