Like trees that grow on land, kelp forests provide essential habitat for species and help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They are also food for sea urchins, which would gobble up entire kelp forests if not for natural predators to keep them in check. A study by SFU resource and environmental management researcher Jenn Burt has found that while sea otters feed on large sea urchins, sunflower stars are equally important because they eat smaller urchins.
