For the first time in its 38-year history, the CKNW Orphans’ Fund Pledge Day raised more than $2 million, including $150,000 from a long-time donor and $100,000 from the Robertshaw family the following day.
The daylong event was hosted by CKNW, Rock 101 and Global BC personalities on December 2 at Vancouver’s Terminal City Club. Interviews with philanthropists, business leaders, media personalities and the children and families helped by the fund were broadcast live on News Talk 980 CKNW and aired on Global BC.
CKNW founded the Orphan’s Fund in 1945, appealing to listeners for contributions to give the orphans of New Westminster’s Loyal Protestant Home a better Christmas. It now provides funding for 15,000 special-needs B.C. children a year, with an emphasis on therapies, educational bursaries and specialized medical equipment.
