Believers in the promise of nuclear fusion must have the faith and patience of Vancouver Canucks fans. But Burnaby-based General Fusion made a small step forward in developing a working fusion reactor earlier this year when it announced its plasma injector, bearing the James Bond-esque name SPECTOR, was capable of sustaining plasma (an ionized gas made up of electron-free hydrogen atoms) long enough to meet the needs of a prototype reactor that the Jeff Bezos-backed company plans to build over the next three to five years. This and more is explained in a breezy but long-form report on the state of fusion research by Vice Media’s Motherboard site.
