Fort St. John is a small city offering big-city amenities. It’s a young, energetic community which offers vast employment opportunities and affordable housing. The city has a population of around 23,000 and supports a trading area of more than 69,000. The median age of 30.6 years makes Fort St. John one of the youngest municipalities in Canada while boasting the highest average incomes in the province.
Reasonable housing prices allow young families to purchase homes and become part of neighbourhoods where children play outside until the street lights come on. There also is plenty of affordable rental accommodation.
A robust economy has created a demand for workers.
“There are so many jobs right now we can’t fill them all, in every sector,” says Julie Rogers, a city communications coordinator. “There is so much opportunity for anyone looking to advance their career or start up their own business.”
The energy industry is the area’s main employer but the economy also includes forestry, construction, mining, tourism and agriculture.
While there is plenty of work, the city also offers a healthy, relaxed lifestyle. Short commutes to work allow for plenty of free time. Top-notch recreation facilities, such as skating and curling rinks, swimming pools and an indoor field house, are complemented by plenty of outdoor activities in both summer and winter.
People escaping the big city will rediscover the joy of leisure time.
“It’s the lifestyle,” says Rogers. “It’s the amount of leisure time and the many ways to spend it.”
Annual events include the High on Ice Winter Fest (ice carving, ice slides, sleigh rides, pond hockey and more), a Chocolate Festival, Theatre Festival and Farmers Markets every weekend.
The city has the Northern Lights College, a post-secondary institution with a working agreement with the University of Northern British Columbia and an airport six kilometres from downtown that offers multiple daily flights to Vancouver and Calgary.
