Kitimat enjoys the best of all worlds

Kitimat is somehow both a well-kept secret and a manufacturing and energy hub driving BC’s and Canada’s economy

Kitimat is somehow both a well-kept secret and a manufacturing and energy hub driving BC’s and Canada’s economy

Kitimat is set on the Pacific coastline at a deepwater, sheltered port. Anyone can enjoy adventures on the saltwater or follow fish up the Kitimat River. There are mountains for hiking and trails for both quiet enjoyment and adrenaline-seeking cyclists. Our stellar indoor recreational facilities mean a variety of lifestyle and wellness programs, too.

For the past several years, Kitimat has been home to a $40 billion liquified natural gas construction project, LNG Canada. It’s been the catalyst for other projects, too. The Haisla Nation, on whose territory the District of Kitimat sits, is leading development of its own LNG project, Cedar LNG, together with Pembina.

Kitimat now finds itself looking at a new, stable future. LNG Canada is moving toward operations, meaning more full-time, long-term residents in town.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for a person looking to build a business here,” says Kitimat’s Director of Economic Development Walsham Tenshak. “We’re seeing more permanent residents moving to Kitimat, people who are young or who have families and are eager to make a home here.”

That means a chance to fill niches not yet tapped.

“There’s going to be many changes in Kitimat over the coming years,” Tenshak adds. “Kitimat is a high-income community with a growing population providing a stable consumer base for retail, restaurants and a variety of lifestyle businesses. Land costs are lower than in more urban communities and development applications have a quick turnaround.”

Entrepreneurs have already tapped this high-income market notably with a new brewery, yoga studio, an additional pizza franchise and an up-coming highway-adjacent quick service restaurant and other upcoming retail space.

Entrepreneurs looking to Kitimat at this time of growth are welcome to contact Kitimat’s Economic Development department by phone at 250-632-8900 or email.
