Joe Segal, An Extraordinary Life—a Vancouver Board of Trade Gala
Vancouver Convention Centre West
June 4, 2013
The largest gala in the Vancouver Board of Trade's 125-year history attracted more than 1,500 guests to celebrate the life and achievements of philanthropist and renowned businessman Joe Segal. It brought in more guests than the May 2012 gala for international business mogul Sir Richard Branson. The gala raised over $2 million for Coast Mental Health, a charity close to Segal's heart.
Gala chair and Joe's son, Lorne Segal, promised a gala "unlike any other this city has seen, promising to be entertaining, insightful and emotional, a moving tribute to a man who has achieved so much and given so much." He delivered on his word with a three-act performance, with actors portraying Joe's life in a musical, documentary-style production. The performance was capped off with a surprise appearance by legendary crooner Paul Anka, thanks to the efforts of the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. Anka sang a personalized version of his hit song My Way for Joe and his wife, Rosalie.
Canada Wide Media chair and CEO Peter Legge unveiled his latest book, Lunch with Joe: Collected lessons and wisdom from business legend Joe Segal, and everyone attending received a copy. Also in attendance was Mayor Gregor Robertson, who announced that June 4 will be officially known as Joe Segal Day.
