The near impossibility of comprehensive online fashion searches, due to nuances of industry lingo. Take for example colour: search for a burgundy sweater, and you might get 500,000 hits, but miss out on 300,000 products in “oxblood.” Molnar and his colleagues built a fashion search engine that draws on more than 100 million “social signals” from across the web to simplify the many nuances of the fashion industry.
