After a sparkling career as a jewelry designer, Martha Sturdy – who is profiled in our September fashion issue – grew dissatisfied with “just making stuff,” as she calls her objects and housewares.

In 2000, she closed her retail boutique in Vancouver’s South Granville neighbourhood and moved to Mount Pleasant. BCBusiness wanted to get a look at her new studio, and so sent Becky Gavigan to do some shooting and ask a few questions. Have a look: Martha shares her thoughts on the rudiments of design, the limits of European minimalism, and the necessity of “editing.”
