Layer 7 Technologies and Global Relay’s Warren Roy win big at the 2013 Technology Impact Awards


The B.C. Technology Industry Association celebrated B.C.’s best technology companies at the 2013 Technology Impact Awards, held at the Vancouver Convention Centre Thursday night.

Vancouver entrepreneur Warren Roy and enterprise data security company Layer 7 Technologies took home top honours as Person of the Year and Company of the Year respectively. 

Seven other awards were handed out Thursday, including:

Adoption of Technology: OpenRoad Communications Ltd. and Transportation Investment Corporation
The two companies collaborated on the Treo.ca website, a platform that let allows drivers to register their vehicles for tolling on the new Port Mann Bridge. The website offered savings and exceeded expections, registering 80 per cent of Port Mann commuters exceeding its original target of 60 per cent.

Community Engagement: Global Relay
Global Relay has committed $1 million over five years to revive the Gastown Grand Prix and another $400,000 to help young Canadian cyclists qualify for the Olympics.

Emerging Company of the Year: QuickMobile
QuickMobile’s event app platform counts more than 30 Fortune 100 companies as clients, and recently raised $3.2 million in funding.

Excellence in Product Innovation: PMC
PMC-Sierra has helped pioneer fast and ultra-high capacity optical networks used to deliver cloud services such as Netflix and Dropbox to telecom customers. It’s 100 GB-per-second optical transport processor leads the industry in speed and bandwidth capacity.

Most Promising Pre-Commercial Technology: Nanotech Security Corp.
Nanotech uses technologies licensed from Simon Fraser University to launch in into the currency authentication and anti-counterfeiting markets.

Most Promising Start-up: FundRazr
Fundrazr works with Paypal combining crowdfunding with causes, connecting individuals, groups, non-profits, artists and entrepreneurs through its online fundraising platform.

Team of the Year: Land Title and Survey Authority of BC (LTSA)
One of the BCBusiness Top Innovators of 2013, the LTSA is modernizing B.C.’s property registration service. The LTSA was awarded for its aggressive shift from an out-of-date system to a new system that has let it conduct 95 per cent of its business electronically.
