The Vancouver-based engine manufacturer will become the largest B.C. tech company with a female president

Westport Innovations Inc. has selected Nancy Gougarty, a former executive at TRW Automotive Corp., citing her experience in the automotive industry.

The Vancouver-based developer of natural gas engines will become B.C.’s biggest technology company with a female president or COO.

Gougarty joined Westport as a director in February, but has since resigned the board seat to take the management position.

Gougarty has previously held leadership positions in the automotive industry, including as managing director of a General Motors joint venture in China. Prior to joining Westport, Gougarty worked for TRW Automotive Corp. as the part-maker’s vice-president for Asia-Pacific.

“Nancy brings valuable direction and experience in product delivery execution from her roles in the global automotive sector,” said David Demers, Westport’s chief executive officer.

“Nancy will play a key role in implementing our strategic priorities, supporting Westport in meeting the challenges of operating a global business and driving Westport’s financial success with her experience in operations and international product sales,” said Demers.

Westport develops engines that use fuels such as liquid natural gas, hydrogen, compressed natural gas and renewable fuels. The company is also B.C.’s third-largest technology company by market capitalization.
