Inside HootSuite’s Game of Thrones Video

Twitter, like you’ve never seen it before.

The social media-management tool turns to the HBO hit show Game of Thrones to explain the online social world to its users

Just in time for the Game of Thrones season premiere, HootSuite reimagined the hit show’s opening sequence, with the fantasy world’s competing kingdoms replaced by these social media companies: Facebook, Google, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube.

HootSuite’s Cameron Uganec, marketing director, says the video was created in-house with the help of an outside 3D artist.

HootSuite riffed on the Game of Thrones theme once again because it has done well for the company in the past. Last June, HootSuite first tried to explain the relationships between different social networks—both tiffs and collaborations—through a Game of Thrones-style infographic. According to HootSuite’s internal metrics, the reference resonated with its audience, which led to this second piece of creative branding.

Uganec says creative, high-value productions help HootSuite build brand awareness and target existing and potential new users. “We are constantly testing ideas,” he says.

Unless you infer that some unfortunate network was deemed House Lannister, Uganec says HootSuite makes no negative associations with the Game of Thrones metaphor. “We don’t throw barbs at our business partners,” he says. “You will notice we didn’t label any of the networks as one of Game of Thrones kingdoms.”
