In fiscal 2016, Bombardier Inc. was again Canada’s most prolific investor in research and development, even as the aerospace and transportation company’s spending dropped 14.2 per cent over the previous fiscal year.
That’s according to Toronto-based Research Infosource Inc., which publishes an annual ranking of Canada’s top 100 corporate R&D spenders.
With just under $1.97 billion, the Montreal-based Bombardier easily led Canadian companies when it came to R&D commitments, outpacing second-place Magna International Inc. ($662.4 million) by more than a billion dollars.
Overall, R&D investment by the top 100 increased over fiscal 2015, rising 1.3 per cent even with Bombardier’s drop.
Telus Corp. led British Columbia companies, placing 20th in the country.
Other B.C. players making the list: MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (No. 26), Sierra Wireless Inc. (No. 29), Arbutus Biopharma Corp. (No. 35), Westport Fuel Systems Inc. (No. 36), Microsemi Storage Solutions Ltd. (No. 47), Zymeworks Inc. (No. 53), Avigilon Corp. (No. 57), Teck Resources Ltd. (66), Ballard Power Systems Inc. (No. 70), Novelion Therapeutics Inc. (No. 82), Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc. (No. 83) and Absolute Software Corp. (No. 88).
Victoria-based Aurinia Pharmaceuticals is the lone B.C. company that isn’t run out of the Lower Mainland.
Of the 13, Zymeworks is the only name not to appear in last year’s ranking. At No. 53, it finished higher than any other company that didn’t make the 2016 list.
