17th Annual Big Sisters Spring Lunch, presented by Scotiabank
Fairmont Pacific Rim
May 28, 2013

Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland held its annual lunch at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, with 330 people in attendance, raising over $56,000. This year’s festivities were emceed by CTV’s Lynda Steele and featured Joy McPhail as the honoured keynote speaker. Joy spoke about her life and career and how mentoring has played a role in her success. She enjoyed a rich career in B.C. politics from 1991 to 2005, during which time she held many significant positions, including Deputy Premier, Minister of Finance and Minister of Education, among others. Today, Joy is co-owner and chair of OUTtv, a wildly successful gay and lesbian TV network.

This annual celebration of mentoring raises money to support Big Sisters’ three mentoring programs, which help hundreds of at-risk girls each year. Since 1960, Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland has been enhancing the confidence, self-esteem and well-being of girls through supportive friendships with caring women. Big Sisters matches vulnerable girls between the ages of 7 and 17 with female volunteers in mentoring relationships and provides ongoing support to these matches.
