One of Canada’s major tech retailers is scrambling to figure out who leaked its release date for the Samsung Galaxy SIII and is ready to take the culprits to the proverbial cleaners.

Best Buy Canada filed a civil suit in B.C. Supreme Court on Tuesday against John and Jane Doe, as its preliminary investigation has yet to turn up the identities of those responsible for the leaks.

The release date for the highly anticipated Android mobile phone was hotly debated all over the Internet when tech website MobileSyrup somehow got its hands on a digital copy of one of Best Buy’s confidential advertising posters with information about the phone’s release and pre-ordering dates.

It’s almost ridiculous in the information age to expect anything can be kept completely a secret, in spite of the company’s best efforts. Apple learned this lesson the hard way, as it tried to keep its iPhone 4 under wraps and failed miserably when Gizmodo got its hands on a prototype and leaked all the phone’s new features.

And considering the lifespan of this kind of technology is only around 18 months, filing a massive civil suit over a phone that will likely be obsolete in the coming year seems a little superfluous.
