The opening of a new financial institution in Vancouver iis a sure sign that our fair city is climbing the ladder of global recognition.

China’s fourth-largest bank is setting up shop in Canada and has chosen to open the office in Vancouver to help hone in on increasing Asia-North American trade.

The Agricultural Bank of China, also known as ABC, celebrated the office opening on Monday. The Vancouver office will be the financial institution’s fifth overseas branch.

A Vancouver branch is a sensible move for the bank as the city serves as the Pacific gateway to Canadian trade with numerous Asian countries, including China, and hosts a sizeable Chinese immigrant population around the Lower Mainland.

The new office is part of state-controlled ABC’s aggressive campaign to expand operations in North America. ABC currently has 23,000 branches across China and its other overseas branches and offices are located in New York, Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore, Seoul, Frankfurt and Hong Kong.
