General Motors will shutter its Oshawa, Ont. plant, leaving 2,000 employees without jobs.

General Motors announces plans to close one of its assembly lines in Oshawa, Ont., cutting 2,000 jobs in the process.

Ontarians continue to get hit hard this week as thousands more lose their jobs in Oshawa.

General Motors confirmed Friday that it would close its plant to the northeast of Toronto, effectively laying off 2,000 employees from its assembly line.

While the layoffs aren’t effective until June 1, 2013, the job losses represent half of the remaining GM positions left in the town. The Oshawa plant manufactured GM’s Chevy Impala and overflow for the Equinox.

Besides the obvious reasons, the massive layoffs and plant shutdown are disturbing because GM is one of several corporations that received billions (a total of $61.5 billion) in bailout funds from the U.S., Canadian and Ontario governments during the financial crisis to prevent such closures.

But GM isn’t the only mega-corporation in Ontario that’s handed out thousands of pink slips recently. Earlier this week, Waterloo-based Research In Motion said it would layoff 6,000 workers as it attempts to regain losses in shares and sales.
