The flailing maker of the BlackBerry tried to woo developers with a sneak peak of its new BlackBerry 10 device.

As Apple and Google move leaps and bounds past Research in Motion in cellphone market share, the flailing BlackBerry maker is running to keep up by courting developers.

At a conference on Tuesday, Research in Motion offered software developers a sneak peak of its new device, dubbed the Alpha Dev, and its new BlackBerry 10 platform. The company hopes independent developers will take to the new platform and build a wealth of applications that will help put the phone on equal footing with the iPhone and Android.

Critics have cited BlackBerry’s clunky platform as the primary obstacle preventing developers from creating the apps cellphone users enjoy, giving the iPhone and Android the competitive advatange.

The Alpha Dev is an iPhone look-alike, featuring a full touch screen without BlackBerry’s signature physical keyboard. And thus far, the market is unimpressed – RIM’s stocks fell two per cent following the device’s unveiling.
