As Samsung battles Apple for mobile market share dominance in North America, the scrappy contender has chosen the Lower Mainland to take the fight up a notch with its first brick-and-mortar store.

The South Korean tech firm chose Burnaby’s Metrotown mall for its first consumer retail store in North America, which opened Wednesday. The 140-square-metre space is a techie’s dream, showcasing the company’s sleekest smartphones, digital cameras, tablets and notebook computers.

The company has enjoyed a number of triumphs in its smartphone war of late, including a recent victory over Apple when a U.S. judge lifted its ban on the sales of its Galaxy Nexus tablet.

A judge temporarily banned the tablet’s sales due to a patent lawsuit filed by Apple, claiming Samsung stole a number of design elements from the iPad and implemented them into its Galaxy Nexus tablet.

Samsung has already begun its coup in the smartphone market in North America. The company overtook Apple in total market share in the first quarter of 2012, growing to 29.1 per cent compared to Apple’s 24.2 per cent. That’s on top of breaking a record for shipping the most phones shipped in a single quarter.
