Yahoo Takes Facebook to Court

Yahoo has filed suit against Facebook, alleging the social media giant has cultivated much of its success from technology Yahoo created.

Old-school Internet giant Yahoo made good on its promise to sue Facebook over patent dispute.

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I wrote that Yahoo was flexing its legal muscles? Well, Yahoo showed it wasn’t bluffing on Monday.

The old-school Internet icon filed suit against Facebook in Federal District Court in San Jose, alleging the ubiquitous social media site infringed on 10 of Yahoo’s patents.

In the filing, Yahoo even goes so far to suggest that Facebook built much of its overwhelming success on technologies Yahoo developed, including features such as the news feed, advertising, customized privacy settings and its messaging system.

Yahoo is seeking an unspecified amount in damages for the potential infringements.

This is the first case where a company has taken a social media company to court over intellectual property. And the timing of the suit isn’t great for Facebook, as the site just recently filed for its initial public offering. A lengthy court battle could potentially affect the IPO, which makes Yahoo’s timing seem more than just a coincidence.

And to add insult to injury, Facebook said in a statement the company found out about the site with the media.

I have a feeling this feud will get pretty ugly as Facebook goes on the defence.
