BC Children’s Hospital raises record $2.7 million at 28th annual Crystal Ball

Thanks to philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian’s surprise purchase of a $1.4 million EOS imaging machine, this year’s BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s 28th annual Crystal Ball raised a record $2.7 million. More than 400 guests attended the gala chaired by Arya Eshghi at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver on November 27. The event was presented by Beedie Development Group and emceed by Sasa Drover and Global BC’s Chris Gailus.

The high-tech X-ray machine will enable the orthopedics team to capture clear and detailed images of children’s entire limbs—the spine, arms or legs—with a single scan and less radiation exposure. The funds raised at the gala will also allow the foundation to establish an endowment to support the technology needs of the BC Children’s Hospital’s orthopedics department.

BC Children’s Hospital is the province’s only full-service acute-care hospital dedicated to serving close to one million children living in B.C. and the Yukon. All seriously ill or injured children are treated at the hospital facility in Vancouver or in their home community with consultation from Children’s specialists. In 2013-14, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation received donations from more than 118,000 people and had revenues of $92 million. Funds raised by the foundation are used to support BC Children’s Hospital, its research institute and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children.
