Power Lunch: West

Artful details are everywhere at West.

First-class dining down to the last detail

West Restaurant has been a celebrated South Granville fixture since opening in 2000, thanks to its award-winning cuisine, attentive, unstuffy service and acclaimed wine and cocktail menus. Energetic executive chef Quang Dang’s locally sourced dishes are complemented by his imaginative presentation.

This attention to detail is woven into every element of the restaurant, from the Hella Jongerius for Maharam fabric wallcoverings—also on display at New York’s Museum of Modern Art—to the spirited cocktail program led by bar manager David Wolowidnyk, recently named the “World’s Most Imaginative Bartender” by Bombay Sapphire.

Rounding out West’s dream team are restaurant and wine director Owen Knowlton, whose accolades include the 2013 Gold Wine List award for West, and talented pastry chef Rhonda Viani, whose chocolate-arts expertise is not to be missed (westrestaurant.com).

BEST TABLE Sink into a supple leather chair at one of the stone tables nearest the front, where you’ll be bathed in light from the skylights and the wall of etched glass windows.

DRINK UP Try Okanagan Crush Pad’s Owen, a smooth and spicy Cabernet Franc, made to celebrate Owen Knowlton’s 2011 “Sommelier of the Year” award. Proceeds support the B.C. Hospitality Foundation’s scholarship fund.

MUST-TRY ORDER Get your greens with Dang’s kale and Brussels sprout Caesar with smoked bacon ($16.50), and then indulge in the double-stuffed ravioli filled with mushrooms and spinach and truffles ($29.50).

INSIDER TIP If your lunchtime is limited, order the three-course lunch menu for $29 and you’re guaranteed to be served in less than 45 minutes, if requested when you first arrive.
